Case Studies

Transforming spaces with practical solutions — a selection of our completed projects.

At Thorn Homes, we bring visions to life — from two-storey house extensions and bungalow expansions to oak-framed garden rooms and complete home refurbishments. Each project presents its own unique challenges, and our team takes pride in finding practical solutions to ensure every build runs smoothly.

Case Study 1

Two-Storey Extension, Cheltenham

Two-storey rear extension with glass balcony, Cheltenham

This two-storey extension transforms an existing home in Cheltenham, combining style and functionality. The design features Crittall-style doors, bi-fold doors, a roof lantern, and a balcony to create light-filled, open-plan living spaces. A luxury en suite and walk-in wardrobe enhance comfort, while the extended layout delivers a modern, family-focused home.

The Challenge

Due to the proximity of mature trees, standard foundations were not suitable and piled foundations were required. In addition, the proposed balcony required specialist structural design to satisfy Building Control requirements.

The Solution

Piled foundations were designed and installed to ensure long-term structural stability. A structural engineer was engaged to design the balcony fixings, allowing full compliance with Building Control and safe integration into the overall structure.

Case Study 3

Oak Frame Extension & Full Refurbishment

Oak frame extension on Cotswold stone property

A beautifully crafted oak frame extension added to an existing Cotswold stone property, featuring a full-height vaulted ceiling with exposed oak beams, French doors opening onto the garden, and a striking apex glazed gable. The project included a full internal refurbishment of the original home — new bathroom, fitted bedroom wardrobes, and sympathetic redecoration throughout.

Key Features

Traditional oak frame structure with vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. Full-height apex glazed gable. French doors to garden. Inglenook fireplace with log burner. Sympathetic Cotswold stone exterior matching the original property.

The Approach

The extension was designed to complement the character of the existing Cotswold stone house. Slate roof tiles, cast-iron guttering, and oak framing ensure the new structure sits naturally alongside the period property — a blend of traditional craft and modern living.
